Thu, 27 Oct 2016 06:42:31 -0400
Belgian political leaders have reached a consensus in support of the landmark EU-Canada trade deal, Prime Minister Charles Michel said Thursday, raising hopes it can be signed soon. "An agreement" has been found, Michel said after the latest round of marathon negotiations aimed at winning over holdouts in Belgium's French-speaking communities who have held up the deal for the entire European Union. Confirmation came swiftly from Paul Magnette, the chief of government of the southern French-speaking Wallonia and the leading holdout to the deal.

Rise of Europe's far right 'different to 1930s': top historian
Thu, 27 Oct 2016 06:33:40 -0400
Europe is not slipping into the same dark tunnel of hate and nationalism that it did in the 1930s, one of the continent's leading historians told AFP. Despite the rise of populist and extreme right-wing parties across the continent, Professor Ian Kershaw -- the acclaimed biographer of Hitler -- insisted that drawing parallels with the rise of fascism was off the mark. In fact, it is thanks to a "liberal and peaceful" Germany, which unlike some of its neighbours, is "very clear-eyed about its past", that Europe is far more able to resist "a slide into barbarism", he argued.

Samsung scion joins board as profits tank on Note 7
Thu, 27 Oct 2016 06:31:50 -0400
Samsung heir apparent Lee Jae-Yong took a major step towards control of the family-run conglomerate on Thursday, joining the board as the company reported a 30 percent profit dive following a highly damaging recall crisis. The move is being seen as a coronation of sorts of the 48-year-old Lee, who is already vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and has seen his influence grow since his father, Samsung patriarch Lee Kun-hee, suffered a heart attack and was hospitalised in 2014. Board chairman Kwon Oh-Hyun said Lee's elevation would give him a greater say in decision-making at the highest level and help foster "long-term, sustainable value" for Samsung shareholders.
